YR senior, Alex Porcelain, receives Young Leadership Award from Jews for Judaism

Yeshivat Rambam senior Alex Porcelain was recognized by Jews for Judaism at a Young Leadership Awards celebration luncheon honoring twelve outstanding young leaders in the Baltimore Jewish Community on June 1, 2008.

Alex has displayed exceptional leadership qualities throughout his years at Yehivat Rambam. At school, synagogue, or the community at large, Alex’s involvements cover a wide and diverse spectrum.  

Alex has served as President of the Yeshivat Rambam’s chapter of the National Honor Society, is currently President of Student Council, and was name co-Valedictorian of his graduating class. He is also a founding member of the high school boys’ choir, and landed the main role in the   drama production of The Frogs this year. Alex has also been the National co-Director of the America Eats for Israel project for the past two years, mobilizing high school students across the U.S. to raise funds in support of feeding the hungry in Israel.  His spirit of volunteerism and giving back also manifests itself with his work for organizations such as Yachad and Chai Lifeline, and he has recently been awarded the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Alex has served as youth group leader and gabbai of the youth minyan at Congregation Shomrei Emunah, and is a member of the Associated’s Teen Leadership Council (TLC).  In his sophomore year, Alex completed a fellowship with the Jewish Volunteer Connection’s Commitment to Service Initiative (CSI) where he received formal training and hands on experience in leadership and communal service. Alex has spent his summers helping kids understand their Jewish heritage at Camp Shoresh in Adamstown, Maryland.

Alex will be continue his Torah study, spending the next year in Israel learning at Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh before heading off to college. His vision for the future and commitment to the community will enhance the leadership of Klal Yisrael for years to come.
