November 2006

Gratz College’s online programs in Jewish studies and the Jewish professions are experiencing hyper growth. Registrations for fall 2006 are up 40% over fall 2005. More and more, students interested in pursuing formal Jewish studies insist on a program that fits within the context and timing of their busy lives. Gratz’s online program truly suits their needs. This coming semester, we offer courses in Jewish studies, Holocaust studies, Jewish music, Jewish education, Jewish early childhood education and Jewish non-profit management. Both our Spring 2007 Online Course Schedule and our Suburban Philadelphia campus courses are included with this e-newsletter.

The November 2006 edition of the Gratz College online e-newsletter is devoted to those who pursue Jewish studies for their own sake, Torah L’shmah. Included are profiles of two such students in the Master of Arts in Jewish Studies program. Neither needs yet another degree to add to their credentials, yet Jil Deheeger from Winnetka, Illinois and Marc Leventhal from Jacksonville, Florida are thirsty for graduate level Jewish studies and have found what they are looking for at Gratz College.

In the spirit of Torah L’shmah, we have included two essays by distinguished Gratz College professors. Dr. Joseph Davis, professor of Jewish Thought, contextualizes the question Who is a Jew in an intriguing manner. In the article Wooden Synagogues of Eastern Europe: Doors Into an Unexpected Past, Dr. Michael Steinlauf, professor of Jewish history at Gratz College and expert in Eastern European and Holocaust studies, introduces us to these lost synagogues that were prevalent in Eastern Europe in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Gratz College’s Jewish Community High School recently launched a very exciting new program: The Kenneth I. Rothbart Distance Learning Program for Teens, the first and only online Jewish high school. JCHS is the largest independent Jewish community high school in the country. Due to the foresight of Rabbi Dov Peretz Elkins, a world renowned author and esteemed rabbi, and a generous donation by Mrs. Jo Rothbart in loving memory of her son, Kenneth, JCHS is now able to extend its reach to Jewish teens across the country – and around the world. This program is ideal for those teens that either do not have access to Jewish education in their local area or are too busy to commit to studying at a particular place or at a specific time. With this breakthrough program, 21st century Jewish teens can continue their Jewish studies in a venue to which they have surely become accustomed. Read the article Distance Learning for Jewish Teens to better understand Rabbi Elkins’ view of the criticality of teen Jewish education for the future of the Jewish community. Please help us spread the word about Gratz College by forwarding this e-newsletter to those interested in lifelong Jewish learning for themselves and to others who foster adult learning in your community. Gratz College is transforming Jewish education in suburban Philadelphia and around the world. Our challenge is to let everyone who is interested know that they can pursue formal Jewish studies regardless of where they live.

As always, feel free to contact me at any time with questions or comments and to learn more Gratz College's distance learning programs."
