| Reflections from the Head of School |
Dear Cardin Community,
I am astonished that a full school year has come and gone since I first arrived at Cardin! I have had so much fun with the Cardin community that I just didn’t want the year to end! The faculty has taken a deep breath, reflected on the 2006-2007 school year and has already begun planning for 2007-2008. Thank you all for making this year terrific!
I once again found a parallel with the Israelites in the chumash and our new alumni. There are 37 years “missing” between last week’s parsha, Korach, and this week’s parsha, Chukat. Why? When we remember our history, as both Jews and members of the Cardin community, we remember the earth shattering events, such as; leaving Mitzrayim, the parting of the red sea, receiving the ten commandments, Miriam and Aaron’s deaths, Moses not being allowed to enter the land, opening a new school, being an only class, starting high school, senior year, prom and graduation. We remember certain personal events as individuals, but our collective memory usually focuses on beginnings and endings. Our graduates are moving on with their heads held high and many collective memories, the easiest high school memories to recall will be
from this year and their freshman year. Our graduates have a lot in common with the people of Israel wandering through the desert. Let us pray that their journey continues with much success and nachat, high peaks and not-so-low valleys and they each reach their own “promised land.”
Shabbat Shalom and have a great summer,
Barbie Prince

We are happy to welcome all of our newly accepted families and look forward to another exciting year in admissions and recruitment. As always, your help, interest and support are key in letting the community know about our school. Our first summer mailing, which we will mail from school at the end of the month, will include a colorful flyer that you might want to share will friends, neighbors or colleagues who have high school-aged children. |
• |
Our annual Open House for prospective families will be held on Sunday, October 21 from 3-5pm. In addition, with the support of a generous grant from the AVI CHAI Foundation, we have begun to plan a series of activities which will allow eighth grade students to see first-hand all that Cardin has to offer. |
• |
The Admissions Office will be closed from July 1 through August 15. Margi Hoffman will check email and voice mail regularly and is happy to meet with any prospective families who are interested in applying for the fall. |

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Cardin School Welcomes New Members to Board of Trustees
At the Cardin School Annual Meeting on May 17, 2007, Howard A. Janet was newly elected as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He succeeds Shoshana S. Cardin, Founding Chair of the Board, who will continue on the Board as Immediate Past Chair. The Board expressed special appreciation to Mrs. Cardin for her remarkable leadership and presented her with a display case to be used for awards, trophies and memorabilia.
Howard A. Janet is the founding and managing partner of Janet, Jenner & Suggs, LLC, a plaintiff’s law firm that practices nationwide. Active in the legal community, he is a past president of the Gary I. Strausberg Foundation, an organization dedicated to the professional education of attorneys and education of the public about the civil justice system and the role of the jury. Mr. Janet’s service on behalf of the Jewish community has included a term as Chairman of Israel Bonds for Maryland and as a member of the Board of Directors of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.
The Cardin School Board Officers elected for the 2007-08 year are: Dr. Ellen L. Taylor, First Vice Chair; Carl S. Silverman, Vice Chair; David B. Shapiro, Treasurer; Michael S. Novey, Secretary. We also welcome newly elected Board Trustees: Sandra Hittman, Stephen Mackler, Marty Skolnik, Laurie Weitz, Karen Wilner and Larry Wolf.
A Fond Farewell
We are deeply grateful to Jan Bernhardt Schein, Dr. Michael Lifson and Alvin Katz for their years of dedicated service to the Cardin Board. Mrs. Schein, the first Board Treasurer, served in this capacity for five years. She chaired the Budget and Finance Committee and served on the Audit Committee. Mrs. Schein will continue teaching the senior Applied Math class at Cardin. Dr. Lifson served on the Head Search Committee in 2006, the Committee on Trustees and the Head Evaluation and Support Committee. We wish Mickey and his wife, Holly, the very best as they make a new home in Montana.

Graduation
The inaugural commencement ceremony of The Shoshana S. Cardin School was an historic and festive afternoon for the 29 members of the founding Class of 2007. Dressed in royal blue caps and gowns and carrying a white rose of tribute to Mrs. Cardin, they processed into the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Sanctuary of Temple Oheb Shalom with pride and dignity. Senator Benjamin Cardin, the honored guest speaker, spoke to the graduates about becoming committed citizens who are involved in their communities. Mrs. Cardin addressed the graduates and their families with gratitude for their investment in the mission of the school and their courage as pioneers in a new institution. Mr. Stewart Greenebaum, Founding President of the Board of Trustees, advised the students to value this time in their lives for, in a blink of an eye, they would be watching from the audience as their own children graduate from high school. Student addresses and performances by the Cardin Vocal Ensemble rounded out a meaningful program, which was followed by a celebratory reception for the many guests who shared this landmark event with us.
