Reflections from the Head of School

Dear Cardin Community,

In Parshat Be-Ha’alotekha, we read about the Israelites' continued preparations for what they believe is the end of their journey.  In school, we watch the seniors do the same!  In reality, just as the Israelites are destined to spend 40 years wandering through the desert, the seniors are meant to continue their adult journey.  Ironically, this parsha also writes about a group of complainers who were dissatisfied with the manna Hashem was providing.  Our seniors are also complaining; dissatisfied with the length of the school year, the amount of work they still have to complete, and everything in-between!  We can’t inflict tzaraas onto our kvetchy seniors, as G-d could with Miriam when she instigated slander against Moshe, but we can remind them of the wonderful activities still to come before the end of this school year.  Activities such as prom, senior dinner, and graduation are rites of passage in a young person’s life.  We need to advise our children to savor this time, as these are the moments they will look upon with such fondness as adults.  During these days, we should continue to remind our students of the bright futures which lay ahead of them.

The last week before high school graduation is a bittersweet time, especially for our Pioneer Class, as they move from the comfort and closeness of the last four years to the excitement of post-high school life.

Shabbat Shalom,
Barbie Prince

SCHOOL NEWS

Classes in Action
Studio Art
On May 17, final projects for the two students in the Intermediate/Advanced Studio Art Seminar were on display during a lunchtime “gallery showing” in the art room.  Senior Laura Ungar’s installation was entitled Casted, and consisted of pieces of plaster moldings of Laura’s face and hands.  Senior Hannah Crystal’s project was called Tipy.  Its focus was a hand-made original stuffed cat (a kind of alternative identity for Hannah) set on a hand-made, tie-dyed cushion with accessories, such as mice companions, devil’s horns, and an angel’s halo.

Applied Math
Armed with $1,000 worth of (imaginary) stock and the annual report of a publicly traded company, our Applied Math students became investment moguls.  They tracked the stock prices of mega corporations such as Coca-Cola, ConAgra, and Disney as well as some “smaller” businesses such as Under Armour, McCormick, and Target.  We defined terms associated with financial statements – asset, liability, inventory, depreciation, profit, cost of sales – to develop a basic vocabulary of finance.  Students debated the risk/reward concept of investing and calculated gains or losses on stock transactions.  To integrate their math skills with research and writing skills, students completed a packet of information sheets and short essay questions based on their independent research.

Beyond the Classroom
Barnes and Noble Event
The Barnes and Noble fundraiser, organized by CAPTS, was an amazing success. The store management was most impressed with our total sales of more than $2,600. The school received a check in the amount of $403, which will be put to good use. Mark Rogers won the raffle prize of iPod accessories and a Target gift card, which was generously donated by the Binyamin family.

Barnes and Noble now knows Cardin and another Book Fair is planned for the fall. Thank you for your generous support. This was a wonderful way to make our school visible in the community. Special thanks to Susan Cohen, Adva Goldberg, and Margi Hoffman for facilitating the project on our behalf.

BZD Walk for Israel
On Sunday, May 20, the Cardin Community was a major presence at the BZD's Walk for Israel.  Cardin students, parents, staff, and siblings walked behind two banners created by Cardin students.  The pleasant weather added to the enjoyment of the day. Thanks to all who participated.

Sports Banquet
On Monday, May 21, Cardin held its Third Annual Sports Banquet.  The name of the program suggests formality and elegance, but doesn’t quite convey the spirit in the room that festive night.  After enjoying a catered meal together, our student athletes and their families applauded one another as individuals and as teams, listening in turn as coach-after-coach spoke about their experiences working with our athletics program.  The stories are familiar, but powerful nonetheless and focused on: making the most of a little; emphasizing the value of team work; pushing hard in the face of daunting odds; gaining skills; and learning how being part of a team is really like being part of a family.  Our girls' basketball coach, Jerry Arnold, made a particularly powerful impression with his emotional send-off to the girls whom he has been working with for four years.  They cheered enthusiastically in response.  The night ended with the naming of the MVP from each team. The male and female Athletes of the Year, Ben Verovsky ’08 and Kim Lenet ’07, were named at the Awards Ceremony the following day.  We thank Coach Minton for making Cardin’s athletics program the best it can be.

Awards Ceremony
On Tuesday, May 22, the Cardin Community gathered to honor our students.  The Temple Oheb Shalom Chapel was filled to capacity as students earned awards in all academic subjects and for outstanding performance and character within the school.  Senator Bobby Zirkin and AXA presented scholarships.  Students were also acknowledged for competitions in which they competed throughout the year.  There was added excitement as the Cardin chapter of the National Honor Society inducted new members.

Prom

We have received information from Shawen.Hannah Solutions, a private group of Educational Consultants, who are forming summer groups for adolescents with issues involving executive functioning (including ADHD) and anger management skills.
