Reflections from the Head of School

Dear Cardin Community,

Each Monday, I run a Parsha HaShavua Minyan where a group of students and I examine the torah portion that will be read on the upcoming Shabbat.  On Sunday evening, I review the parsha and look for interesting and exciting points to share with the students.  This week, when we examined Parsha Bechukotai, my students and I discussed how Hashem’s blessings are presented in general terms and the tochachah (admonitions) are given in great detail. Ibn Ezra instructs us that the specificity of the punishments is intended to awe the people into obedience to God’s will.  After Minyan, I kept returning to this explanation and the similarities between parents and children as compared with God and the Jewish people. When our children are young and misbehave, we mete out punishments or consequences in order to teach them to have awe for the rules and, indeed, for us as the adults in their lives.  Thus, we teach them to follow the rules and obey the adults. As children grow into young adults, consequences are designed to teach a different lesson; that rules are designed to keep us safe and allow us to live together harmoniously. Just like God, we, as the adults who deeply care for the young people in our charge, guide them by identifying possible consequences to their actions as they make their way through this very complicated world.
Shabbat Shalom,
Barbie Prince

Athletics

The baseball season is progressing nicely.  We are really excited about the positive steps the boys are taking in understanding the game of baseball.  Also, we have started a tennis club that meets two to three times a week.  Mr. Whitfeld is coaching the club with guest appearances by Rabbi Yaakov and Mr. Hotz.

The Athletics Department is preparing for the End of Year Sports Banquet.  We will acknowledge all of the teams that have blessed us with their talent over the past year, and honor student athletes for their academic achievement as well as excellence in a particular sport. Foye Minton

Admissions Update

The numbers for next year are looking solid. Our “rolling admissions” policy has been productive, and we continue to greet visitors who are interested in attending Cardin in the fall. Several successful outreach initiatives have garnered curiosity and inquiries. Please encourage friends and neighbors to contact Margi Hoffman at extension 207. It is not too late to “Consider Cardin.”

Amazing Race postponed until the fall.

SCHOOL NEWS

Classes in Action
Psychology

Students enrolled in AP and standard psychology participated in Deviant Day at The Cardin School.  The objective was for students to violate some aspect of their self-image for an entire day without telling anyone why, and to observe how others react to their change in personal norms.  The Code of Student Conduct was honored in participating in this activity.  Students were creative and made interesting efforts to breach aspects of their personal norm.  A second objective was to generate empathy for those who suffer from abnormalities and to experience the possibilities of how to cope, internally and externally, with these issues.  It was a productive activity. 11th grade US History
Students explored wartime propaganda, and then, under the guidance of Ms. Wittner, created their own poster using various artistic techniques, to promote an issue of importance to them.Amy Fink

Beyond the Classroom
SGA
DDR night on April 28th was a blast!  Students enjoyed a light and sound extravaganza at a Dance Dance Revolution competition.  Congrats to the winners: Dan Eisenberg and Ben Jacobson.
Student Government members rented themselves during the school day on Thursday, May 3rd for a successful fundraiser. Other Cardin students rented the SGA members to carry their books, make their lunches, take notes in class, and more. Prices ranged from $5 for a one-period rental  all the way up to $21 for a full day with a packed lunch and a formally dressed SGA member.

Outdoor Adventure Day
Twenty-four students from the classes of 2009-2011 attended Outdoor Adventure on Sunday, April 29th.

HaZamir Baltimore
Four Cardin Students – Sophie Bass ‘08, Emily Boling ‘10, Daniel Eisenberg ‘08, and Kayla Reisman ‘10 – performed on Sunday, May 6th as part of HaZamir Baltimore, a newly established choral experience for youth. The performance included three choral ensembles; Kol Rina, an adult choir under the direction of Michael Lesley followed by the KSDS Middle School Choir and HaZamir Baltimore under the direction of Erika Schon. It was a great performance by all, and it is wonderful that a number of our students have the amazing opportunity to be involved with this international organization. Paul Carroll

Grandparents’ Day 2007
On Friday, April 27, our grandparents enjoyed a glimpse of life at the Cardin School.  They began the morning by joining their grandchildren at the weekly Beit Midrash (communal study) where the subject of “Making Good Choices” was discussed.  Grandparents were invited to share pivotal choices that they made in their high school and young adult years.  The choices available to the grandparents were markedly different from the options now available to our students!

During our first period classes, grandparents and students studied the poems of Emily Dickinson, played with pressure vs. volume relationships using lab probe equipment, and compared the poems delivered at the inaugurations of Presidents Kennedy and Clinton.  One grandparent attending a Hebrew class commented, “I loved seeing and hearing the girls talking in Hebrew.”

The morning closed with a delightful reception, including remarks from Barbie B. Prince and Rabbi Joel A. Alter, and conversation to the sounds of the Cardin Vocal Ensemble.

After Prom Party
Plans are well under way for Cardin’s first After Prom Party, sponsored by CAPTS. The party will be held at the JCC Park Heights from 12:30- 4:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed to set up, clean up and chaperone, especially parents of Freshman and Sophomores! The committee is soliciting prizes for our all night raffle drawings and Grand prize drawings, and is seeking funds toward our event. The evening will include swimming, basketball, DJ/music, karaoke, the big wheel, black jack, special events such as jump for money, half court shoot-off contests, and much more. Of course, food will be served and the party will end with breakfast. Please support this safe event! To volunteer, chaperone, sponsor or provide a prize, please contact Shellie Cassel, haydencas@msn.com.

COLLEGE SCENE
We are establishing a new Office of College Counseling for the fall of 2007. Ms. Hallie Schein will assume the new full-time position of Director of College Counseling in August of 2007.  Ms. Schein, a recent Franklin and Marshall College graduate, will work closely with students and their parents as she guides them through the process of identifying colleges and post secondary programs that are the best match for each individual. She will provide a timeline for the college search process and assist with college applications.  In the interest of building our connections, Ms. Schein will visit colleges and invite college representatives to meet with students at Cardin. Parents are invited to meet Ms. Schein during an open house from 7:45am – 8:45am on Wednesday, May 30th.

We have also retained Joan W. Mudge to serve as a consultant to the Cardin School and as a resource to Ms. Schein.  Her role will focus on facilitating our connections with college and university admission offices and providing Ms. Schein with access to a vast reservoir of expertise in college counseling.  Mrs. Mudge is recognized as one of the leading college counselors in the country.

Finally, we want to thank Steve Goodman for his efforts on behalf of our students during the past two years.  His guidance was invaluable to many of our current seniors and we wish him the best in all future business endeavors.
