Reflections from the Head of School

Dear Cardin Community,
Some of you might be aware of the difficult time my family and I had getting to Israel for Pesach.  Our plane from Baltimore on Wednesday was delayed and we missed our connecting flight in Newark.  While 2 of my children were able to board a plane leaving Thursday, the other 4 members of my family had to wait until Sunday, losing 4 precious days with our dear, dear Israeli friends.  Ironically, the subject of punctuality was discussed in Thursday’s faculty meeting, in respect to students being tardy to class. While arriving on time to class might seem trivial compared to arriving on time for a connecting flight, the loss of instructional time is, to me, vastly more detrimental than the loss of a few vacation days.  I encourage everyone to look at the far reaching implications of our actions in order to realize what is really important.
Kol Tuv,
Barbie Prince

Admissions Update

The numbers for next year are looking solid. Our “rolling admissions” policy has been productive, and we continue to greet visitors who are interested in attending Cardin in the fall. Several successful outreach initiatives have garnered curiosity and inquiries. Please encourage friends and neighbors to contact Margi Hoffman at extension 207. It is not too late to “Consider Cardin.”

Help Needed- I am searching for current Cardin families who would like to serve as “buddy” families for our newest additions. This is a wonderful way for us to welcome new students and parents to Cardin. Call Margi Hoffman for details.

CAPTS (Cardin Association of Parents, Teachers & Students)

CAPTS is looking for several parents to take the lead in fundraising and programming projects.  If you can volunteer even a few hours, please contact Dee Marcus, marcusfamily@comcast.net or Shellie Cassel, haydencas@msn.com. If you are interested in running for office and have not contacted Sue Crystal please do so before the April election meeting.

Upcoming CAPTS meetings: (all held Wednesdays at 7:30)
April 25 (annual meeting/election), May 30 (installation of new board)

SCHOOL NEWS

Classes in Action
Did you know that basketball courts can be used for math class?  Ms. Moffets’s 11th grade class utilized the half-court circle in order to understand the meaning of radians in a concrete fashion. The students measured the radius of the circle and cut 6 pieces of red string the length of the radius and another piece a little more than a quarter of the length of one of the 6 pieces.  We then placed the 7 pieces of string end to end around the circumference and aha! the circumference of the circle was 2 times pi times the radius.

Beyond the Classroom
On Tuesday, students will experience the transition from the somber Yom HaZikaron, Day of Remembrance, to the celebratory Yom Ha’atzmaut, Independence Day. After enjoying an Israeli lunch, students will participate in a ceremony commemorating the fallen Israeli soldiers and terror victims. Then, the 9th and 10th graders will watch a political film highlighting the lives of young Israelis, while the 11th and 12th graders will meet with a representative of the David Project to learn about Israel advocacy and what they can do in their lives to promote a love of Israel. To conclude the events of the day, students will join together to compete grade vs. grade in a series of exciting games highlighting facts about Israel.

The modulars are indeed in the works.  The latest update indicates that we should receive the building permit from Baltimore County around the third week of May, and the unit should be delivered approximately one week after we receive the permit.

The Board of Trustees continues to actively pursue a permanent site.
