Reflections from the Head of School

Dear Cardin Community,
I am still in awe over interim week.  Is it really over? Six Days Plus 40 Years was one of the most intensive and meaningful experiential educational experiences I have ever encountered.  The students were fully engaged in all manner of activities from basic training to lectures.  I’d like to thank Morah Rosen, Ms. Fink and Moreh Geva for putting together an amazing week.  I’d also like to thank the faculty, students, and parents whose dedication made interim week 2007 possible.
Shabbat Shalom,
Barbie Prince

SCHOOL NEWS

Good and Welfare
I am pleased to announce that Rabbi Stuart Seltzer, a highly respected and accomplished Jewish educator, will join the Cardin School faculty as new Dean of Judaic Studies for the 2007-2008 academic year.  In this capacity, he will oversee our growing Judaics Department, as well as work with Leslie Smith-Rosen to further develop our integrated studies curricula, and the entire school population to advance Cardin’s Jewish way of life.
Rabbi Seltzer’s vision for the school goes hand in hand with our mission as a pluralistic school where students from all of the denominations are being educated by a cross-section of the Jewish community.  He brings the expertise, inventiveness, and passion that will engage our students and faculty as we grow in new directions.

Mazal tov to Matthew Marcus, ’09 for being selected by the National Space Club to participate in its annual Scholars Program at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for Summer 2007.  Matt will be working with NASA scientists and engineers over the six week program.

The School wishes to extend our condolences to Cardin parent, Desiree Robinson, and Cardin students, Byron McKenney-Powell and Yoshi Robinson on the loss of their mother and grandmother.  May God bring them comfort together with all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Beyond the Classroom
International Day
Hola! Néih hóu! Shalom! Lay ho! Ave! Bonjour! Goeie dag! Zdravstvuite!
On Thursday, February 22nd students and faculty assembled in the Oheb Auditorium to experience Cardin’s equivalent of Disney’s EPCOT Center.  Each year, the Cardin community becomes a bit worldlier and this year, we were lucky to celebrate cultures from China, France, South Africa, Israel, Russia, Argentina, and Ancient Rome.  Faculty and “foreign dignitaries” welcomed student groups to each cultural ‘station’ where they experienced different food, art, crafts and musical performances.   We’d like to thank our foreign dignitaries for helping with this event: Dr. Nina Kashtelyan, Dr. Ana Frumin and Mr. Jay Ng who were able to take time from their busy schedules to be with us.  Faculty presenting cultural information included; Señorita Frumin, the coordinator and MC of international day, Ms. Linde and Mr. Whitfield (South Africa), Dr. Ng (China), Madame Rowen (France), Morah Chaban, Morah Abraham and Moreh Geva (Israel), and Ms. Beabout (Ancient Rome).  The rest of the faculty was privileged to join the students in experiencing the different activities.  Thank you to everyone for the preparation and execution of this stimulating and interesting activity.

Cardin student artists Katie Mikhalnyuk, ’08, Hannah Silverman, ’07, Laura Ungar, ’07, and Rebecca Weinstein, ’08 are participating in of Doors & Keys, an exhibit at the Norman & Sarah Brown Art Gallery at the Park Heights Jewish Community Center.  The exhibit runs from March 25th until June 10th.  Laura Ungar’s piece is pictured.

INTERIM WEEK
The Six Days Plus Forty Years interim week was framed by our Purim seudah and a Shabbat of peace.  In between were over 5 full days of powerful learning, research and activities.  Each of the six student kvutzot, groups, named for IDF leaders from the six day war, and lead by mefakdim (student leaders from the senior class) were required to report on each day’s news in Hebrew and English, as well as work together as a team to complete different tasks. Also, each individual member earned points for volunteering, prompt arrival at activities and overall  appropriate participation.  The overall points earned will be added up and the winning kvutzah will be announced in the near future.
Students were woken up each morning by sirens or shofars with the goal of each kvutzah being together in 1.5 minutes.  One of the highlights of the trip was the morning “skit” with Mr. Hotz as Egyptian infantry Captain Amin el-Motassadeq acting with Brigadier General Zvi Geva to bring the war to life in Arabic and Hebrew. During the day, students and faculty were privileged to hear experts ranging from reporters to tank commanders who were involved in the war.  Many of Cardin’s faculty prepared sadnaot, courses, to educate and inform the students about different aspects of the cultural, social, and political climate of the time. Students were able to experience urban fighting to simulate the battle in Jerusalem and modified boot camp.  We even had snow to simulate the desert sand!  Evening activities included Café ’67 (starring Mr. Rothberg and our own very talented students), movies in English and Hebrew, capture the flag, and a dance.

“It was just a great time, and I extend kudos to all the faculty participants and to the students who worked so hard to make this a fun and educational experience for all! As a new teacher, I thought this whole opportunity was just fantastic....this is the sort of thing that sets Cardin apart and gives a whole new meaning to the term “interactive education.” Mark Hotz
“You really outdid yourself this time. You presented an inspiring, motivating, captivating program that really engaged Todd. He enjoyed the lectures immensely! Your hard work and commitment to this program and Cardin School in general is just another example of why I know I made the right decision in sending Todd to Cardin.” Janice Weinstein to Leslie Rosen
