SCHOOL NEWS

Classes in Action
Latin
The Latin I and II students celebrated Saturnalia, a Roman festival held the week of December 17th in honor of the god Saturn, by performing Latin skits, making garlands, wearing togas, and snacking on Roman style treats.  Maureen Beabout

History
The 9th grade history classes completed a major project on Who’s Who In Roman History.  Students had to select an individual from the first century CE and research why this person is noteworthy in Roman History.  Students wrote a script, acted out their play in class or videotaped it at home, and created a poster to reinforce the historical importance of the person researched.  Students had fun, showed creative energy, and learned lessons that go beyond Roman history.  Bob Cantor

Jr./Sr. “At Home” Activities
The juniors and seniors who were unable to participate in Halikha Ba’Aretz spent an engaging and meaningful two weeks thanks to Ms. Fink and the Cardin staff.  The programming included: Physics Projects—students made wire sculptures and bottle rockets;
Our Daily Bread
—students and faculty served food at Our Daily Bread;
Maryland Food Bank
—students and faculty sorted and categorized non-perishable food items;
Project Linus
—students made fleece blankets for seriously ill and traumatized children, ages 0-18;
Learning Ladder
—Cardin students read to the children and participated in activities with them. While children were napping, they learned how to plan activities with teachers at the Learning Ladder;
Film Noir—students read a brief film noir short story (“Murder at the Automat”) to help them define the bleak world of these dark detective dramas. Then students performed a few sections of rapid-fire dialogue from James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity, to appreciate some of the verbal swordplay in this type of novel—all to prepare for watching the classic black and white film about insurance scam and murder,
Double Indemnity
; Chinese Calligraphy—students were provided with a brief look at the basics involved in doing brush work and an understanding of how calligraphy fits into Chinese art. Students had the chance to practice with brushes and black ink;
Psychology Movie
—students watched and analyzed “What About Bob;”
Crepes and French Activity
—students made Crepes and watched a French film;
Civic Works
—students and faculty went downtown to work on a building renovation project;
Baltimore Museum of Art
—students and faculty were led through the museum to explore varying types of art;
Baltimore Clayworks
—students and faculty traveled to Baltimore Clayworks, in Mt. Washington, to work with artist Michelle Brooks; Othello—students and faculty visited the Folger Shakespeare Library, went out to dinner and attended the American Ballet Theater’s production of Othello at the JFK Center in Washington, D.C;
Wrap-up
—students reflected on the past two weeks through the lens of Judaism and explored various Jewish values in relation to their experiences;
Scrapbooking—using the pictures students took and the journal entries they wrote, students created a scrapbook of their two-week experience.

COLLEGE SCENE
It is an exciting time as our seniors continue to hear from colleges and universities.  Look for a complete list in the spring.
A college breakfast meeting for parents of juniors will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 8:00-9:30am in  Temple Oheb Shalom’s Taylor Learning Center.  Barbie Prince and Steve Goodman will discuss Cardin’s college-related procedures for the Class of 2008 and will be available to answer questions about the upcoming college admissions process.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
The Institute for Genomic Research has merged with the J. Craig Venter Institute and is offering summer internships for teenagers.  The website for more information is www.venterinstitute.org/education/internship.php.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
I am delighted to announce the addition of an exciting initiative at Cardin. The proactive Advisory Program has been created to help craft meaningful relationships between faculty and students and is designed to become a rewarding and valuable part of the students’ high school experience. Advisory will begin on January 19th and groups will meet on alternate Fridays through June.
Due to popular interest, we will be initiating a series of parent group discussions designed to strengthen the connection and the lines of communication among parents. Through the Parent Connection, parents will be encouraged to share their ideas, experiences, and concerns to promote better understanding and awareness of family issues. Some objectives of this initiative are: to give a safe, confidential forum for parents to receive peer input about their questions and issues in a non-judgmental environment; to use their collective wisdom and experience to enrich parenting ideas and skills; to provide opportunities to develop creative solutions to family and community challenges.
Details about our first gathering will be forthcoming. Please email me - jvillet@shoshanascardin.org if you are interested in attending. Jackie Villet
